a poem of salvation

A Poem of Salvation

In a dungeon of deep darkness
My soul bound up in chains
Fear and despair my faithful companions,
Trapped in guilt and shame

My eyes, they strained to see the sun
But thick walls covered the light
Hopeless and helpless, I cried out for mercy
For Day to conquer this never-ending Night

I heard a voice, so still, so sweet
A burning ember in the cold
It lit up my heart, for so long so dead
And sang a story of old

The beauty of this simple song
Pierced my heart right through
I saw the darkness in my heart
Through the voice of Truth

I wept and wept, but listened again:
There was hope in the words I heard
And my heart and my mind were opened up
Like the mouth of a baby bird

All of a sudden, You came in
Pure Light in the darkest prison
You wept with me as you loosed my chains
And you kissed my wounds within

You showed me the scars in your hands and your side
The blood you shed for my sin
You gave up your life but you rose from the dead
To bring us to life again

You spoke of the power given by God
Because you are one with Him
And how we will live forevermore
Because of your victory o’er sin

Transported, I was, from this utter darkness
Into a Kingdom of Light
Undeserving and rescued by grace
Transformed by Love so bright

Oh the joy of that day when you rescued my soul
I ate at your banqueting table;
Never forsaken and never alone
Because You alone were able
