Agreeing with God
One of the greatest ways we can worship God is by agreeing with Him. If you think about it, this is the very thing that separates believers from unbelievers. Believers agree with God that: He is the only God and Creator, that His attributes listed in scripture are trustworthy and true, that Jesus is the Messiah who died for our sins and was raised to life, and His purposes and plans will unfold as He has laid out in His word. Unbelievers disagree with God about these things, and choose to follow their own inclinations. Agreeing with God leads to life, and disagreeing with God leads to death.
Something has come to my attention recently; a conviction that I have not been agreeing with God about how He sees me. Please don’t miss this point for yourself!
At some point in my past, the conviction that “I am not good enough” took root in my heart. I grew up feeling like no matter how hard I tried, I would always be unlovable and unacceptable. I saw myself as a wicked sinner, and God as holy, righteous and yet merciful. I trusted Jesus as my Saviour and Lord, but I was still missing something. What was left out was the knowledge of how precious I am to God, and that I can – and should – agree with Him about what He says about me. What I have learned is that it is not humility to devalue ourselves; it is in fact sin.
1. God created me, and created me wonderfully.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!”
-Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV) 17-18 (NLT)
2. God chose me to be a part of his family before I ever did anything to earn it!
The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus,
“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” (Ephesians 1: 4-5 NLT)
